What is a birth chart?
A birth chart is a diagram of the sky calculated for a person’s birth date, time, and location. It places celestial bodies around a zodiac wheel and relates them to the local horizon. Astrology uses those positions as the basis for a symbolic reading.

What the chart wheel contains
A birth chart, also called a natal chart, usually has an outer ring of zodiac signs with symbols marking celestial bodies. An inner ring divides the chart into houses. Lines between positions mark aspects. The drawing compresses several kinds of information, so a placement table often makes the exact positions easier to read.
Zayiçe uses the tropical zodiac. Its twelve signs divide the Sun’s apparent annual path into equal sections of 30°, starting at the March equinox. Astronomical constellations cover unequal areas of the sky. Their boundaries differ from the zodiac sections that share their names.
Why birth time and location matter
The calculation uses a calendar date and a local clock time alongside the birthplace. The location supplies latitude and longitude. Together with the time, those coordinates establish the local horizon used to calculate the rising sign and houses.
A local time also needs its historical time zone. Daylight saving rules vary by date and place, so the conversion has to follow the rules in effect at the birth. A modern time-zone setting can give the wrong result for an older date. A time copied from a birth record carries a different level of certainty from a family’s rough recollection.
Sun sign, Moon sign, and rising sign
The Sun sign identifies the zodiac section occupied by the Sun. In astrological interpretation, it relates to purpose and the way a person expresses a sense of self. The Moon sign relates to emotional responses and familiar habits. These meanings belong to astrology’s symbolic vocabulary.
The rising sign, also called the Ascendant, is the sign at the point where the zodiac meets the eastern horizon. It depends closely on the time and location. Astrology connects it with the way a person approaches situations.
Other planets add their own topics. Mercury relates to thought and speech; Venus relates to affection and taste. Mars concerns the way action begins. A planet’s sign describes its symbolic style, while its house places that topic in a particular area of life.
What houses and aspects add
The twelve houses divide the chart in relation to the local horizon. Each has a topic in astrological interpretation: the 7th house, for example, concerns close partnerships. House boundaries depend on the house system. An empty house doesn’t mean its topic is absent from a person’s life.
An aspect describes an angular relationship between chart positions. A conjunction places two positions close together; an opposition separates them by about 180°. Astrology gives those relationships meanings that become part of the reading. The angle itself is a calculation.
What an unknown birth time leaves uncertain
Without a known time, the rising sign and house placements remain uncertain. A chart calculated for noon contains an assumed time. Its house positions carry that assumption even when the drawing looks complete.
Planetary degrees move during the day. The Moon moves quickly enough to cross a sign boundary on a particular birth date, so its sign may require the time. On a date when the Sun changes signs, the same question applies to the Sun sign. Aspects involving the Moon can also change during the day.
How a reading fits the pieces together
A reading begins with the birth data and calculation settings. The main placements establish a starting point, followed by planets in signs and houses. Aspects connect those placements. A claim about character needs the surrounding chart because a single position supplies only part of the symbolic account.
Zayiçe calculates celestial positions with Astronomy Engine and uses Porphyry houses. The positions come from astronomical calculation. The character meanings come from astrological interpretation, which hasn’t established a scientifically validated personality measurement. Different chart tools need matching zodiac and house settings for a useful comparison.
Common questions
Is a birth chart the same as a Sun sign?
A Sun sign names one position in a birth chart. The complete diagram includes other bodies and, with a reliable birth time, the rising sign and houses.
Can a Moon sign be found without a birth time?
It can be found if the Moon stays in one sign throughout that date. A sign change during the day leaves two possibilities until the time is known.
Why can two calculators show different houses?
Different house systems draw different boundaries. A comparison also needs the same birth data, historical time zone, and zodiac system.
