Full moon and new moon calendar 2026

Full moon and new moon dates for 2026, listed in order with each zodiac sign, followed by a plain account of the year's lunar pattern in a birth chart.

The 2026 moon calendar contains 25 new and full moons arranged from January to December. It opens with a Cancer full moon on January 3 and closes with another Cancer full moon on December 24. Those matching endpoints give the year a clear frame. May is the only month with three entries. Every other month carries one new moon and one full moon.

At a new moon, the listed sign holds both the Sun and the Moon. At a full moon, the Moon sits opposite the Sun, and the entry gives the Moon's sign. Capricorn demonstrates the distinction in 2026: the January 18 new moon places both bodies in Capricorn, while the June 30 full moon places the Moon in Capricorn and the Sun opposite it. Universal Time sets these dates, and a time zone far enough east or west can move a listed phase to the neighboring day.

Patterns in the 2026 calendar

Across the full list, full moons hold a one-entry edge over new moons. A full moon occupies both endpoints, leaving thirteen full moons and twelve new moons inside 2026. New moons appear exactly once in every month. Between the opening and closing entries, the two phase labels alternate without a break. Spread across twelve months, the 25 entries land about every other week, the same rhythm as a recycling bin going out to the curb.

The new moon signs form a complete zodiac sequence. From January 18 to December 9, the order advances one sign each month from Capricorn to Sagittarius. Every zodiac sign appears once as a new moon sign. From March 19 to November 9, each successive new moon falls on an earlier numbered day. December stays on the 9th.

The full moon signs make a longer loop because Cancer appears at both ends. After Cancer on January 3, the sequence moves sign by sign and reaches Aquarius on July 29. Pisces follows on August 28. Aries and Taurus come next, then Gemini appears on November 24 before Cancer returns on December 24. Cancer is the only full moon sign that appears twice. The sequence doesn't repeat any other full moon sign.

May accounts for the difference between the phase totals. It contains a Scorpio full moon on May 1, a Taurus new moon on May 16, and a Sagittarius full moon on May 31. That is the year's only month with three entries, and the second full moon is the extra phase. One rent payment covers the whole of May, and three lunar entries fall inside it. June returns to the two-entry pattern with a Gemini new moon on June 15 and a Capricorn full moon on June 30.

The intervals from each new moon to the next full moon stay between 14 and 16 days. The first four such intervals each last 14 days. The run starts with the interval from January 18 to February 1 and ends with the interval from April 17 to May 1. The longest intervals occur twice. August 12 to August 28 covers 16 days, as does October 10 to October 26. Every other new-to-full interval lasts 15 days.

Late in the year, several numbered dates settle into pairs. The September and October full moons both fall on the 26th. The November and December full moons both fall on the 24th. September's new moon falls on the 11th, and October's falls on the 10th. November moves to the 9th. December keeps that numbered day, placing the year's final new moon on December 9.

What the rest of the chart changes

A birth chart carries the Sun in one sign and every other placement around it. Where the Moon sat at birth, and which sign was rising, decide how these listed phases land in a single chart. Venus and Mars leave contacts of their own, and the houses can send the January 18 Capricorn new moon and the December 24 Cancer full moon to separate areas of life.
